Chicago

Architecture of the greats...

I have always admired the works of Frank Lloyd Wright-I had hoped to make it to Fallingwater a home he designed in Pittsburgh but my travels were cut short due to COVID, I did however get to visit Hollyhock House in LA (not far from where I lived) and whilst in Chicago I did a walking tour in Oak Park of Frank Lloyd Wrights architecture including his own home he designed for his family which was also his studio where the “Pairie” style of design was conceived. It was such a great experience to actually walk through his home and to immerse yourself in his design. Whilst touring his home I had a sense of calm throughout his house-it had extensive use of wood panelling and surprisingly small windows which didn’t detract from getting light into the house. A favourite of mine was the barrel ceiling used in the upstairs children’s playroom. Walter Burley Griffin worked closely with Frank Lloyd Wright and was responsible for the planning of our nation’s capital Canberra - the place I was born and grew up in.

I then continued my walk through Oak Park with many more displays of Wright’s residential work finally finishing at the Unity Temple-a must see if you are ever in Chicago.
